Flying ants or termites in Cairns? Check these three features
Use the waist, antennae and wing pairs together, then judge the emergence point. Where the insects came from tells you more about urgency than the number circling a light.
Do not decide from wings alone
Both ants and termites produce winged reproductives, commonly called alates. Both can arrive suddenly after rain, shed their wings and gather around windows. Use three body features together. A termite alate has a broad body without a narrow waist, fairly straight bead-like antennae and two pairs of delicate wings that are similar in length. An ant alate has a clearly pinched waist, elbowed antennae and larger front wings with shorter rear wings.
Loose wings alone are less reliable. Termite wings commonly detach easily and may form a pile on a sill, but ants can also lose wings. Photograph an intact insect beside a coin for scale, then keep 1 or 2 in a sealed clear container. Do not handle unknown insects with bare hands and do not crush every specimen before somebody can identify it.
Colour is not a safe shortcut. Termite alates can be pale brown, dark brown or nearly black, and Cairns has multiple ant species with dark winged forms. Body shape and emergence point are more useful. Indoor emergence and outdoor attraction are different events
More urgent: insects emerging from the building
Alates pushing from a repeatable crack, a timber joint or an internal wall are not merely visitors attracted to light. The source may be workings in or beside the structure. Mark the exit point with removable tape, take close photos, retain specimens and arrange a timber-pest inspection within 1 to 3 business days. Do not poke into the hole, remove the skirting or flood it with aerosol. Disturbance can remove the evidence needed to trace activity.
Also urgent are piles of fresh wings appearing in the same internal room on several mornings, mud packing behind trim, papery or hollow timber, and moisture staining near the emergence point. A swarm does not reveal the amount of damage. Only an inspection can determine whether the building is active, where access is limited and whether further invasive investigation is justified.
Lower immediate concern: insects arriving at an exterior light
A large flight around a veranda light after rain can originate from a colony well beyond the property. Close windows and doors, turn off unnecessary exterior lights for 1 or 2 hours, retain specimens and vacuum the rest after documenting them. This event alone does not prove the house is attacked. It does prove that mature colonies are active in the local environment, which is a useful prompt to check whether the annual AS 3660 inspection is current.
If the last inspection was more than 12 months ago, the home has prior activity, the slab edge is hidden, or the block backs onto dense vegetation, book the inspection rather than relying on where the swarm seemed to start at night. Bright lights can make direction hard to judge.
Warm still evenings after rain create the window
Mature termite and ant colonies time reproductive flights around favourable conditions. In Cairns, warm air, high humidity, little wind and moisture after early wet-season rain can align on the same evening. A flight may last less than an hour, yet a bright wall light can concentrate thousands of alates from the surrounding area. That is why a clean veranda can appear covered without warning.
Swarm season is not treatment season in the sense of spraying every flying insect. The flight is a diagnostic opportunity. October through the early wet is a sensible time to make slab edges visible, pull mulch and soil below inspection zones, clear stored timber, repair drainage and check the meter-box termite notice. Cairns is within the range of destructive Coptotermes species and Mastotermes darwiniensis. Species identification matters because biology, likely nest location and the treatment plan differ. It is not realistic to identify every alate species from a blurred ceiling photo, and no responsible quote for chemical protection should be based on that photo alone.
Pay for an inspection, not a spray of the swarm
A standard residential termite inspection in Cairns commonly costs $250 to $400, with a larger, high-set, split-level or access-limited property sometimes around $500. The useful scope includes the building exterior, accessible interior, roof void, subfloor where present, moisture checks, nearby conducive conditions and a written report. A $100 visit that identifies a loose wing but does not inspect the structure has not answered the costly question.

Ask the quoting technician to state the species or best-supported identification, active locations, inaccessible areas, colony-control stage, property-protection stage and follow-up interval.
In Queensland, termite pesticide work must be performed by a technician whose current pest management licence authorises timber-pest activity. The product must be APVMA-registered and applied according to label. A normal inspection and pesticide treatment do not usually need a Cairns Regional Council permit, but opening walls or completing structural repairs is separate work and may require the appropriate trade.
